Another t-shirt upcycle: The next project

I am generally in a constant state of planning and dreaming about what project I will tackle next. Because of this I sometimes have a hard time finishing projects because I can't wait to get to the next project! I just get too excited about DIY!! Here is the next thing I want to try.

It's a t-shirt scarf. I have a ton of old t-shirts hanging around that need a new life. Many of them I will never wear again, but they have such good memories attached to them. I have one particular teal shirt that may very well be the first victim in this project! I am also thinking about painting a pattern onto the shirt before I cut it up to make a fun patterned scarf.

I found this on Pinterest and thought it was a great idea:

Use an empty toilet paper roll and fabric paint to create a pattern.

Myths about DIY

I found this list of myths about DIY wedding decor here and I can relate to some of them. Recently, I was talking to my mom about what kind of a wedding I would want to have. I told her that I wanted something that wasn't expensive or overly fancy. That's just not me. I want a cheap wedding and a more expensive honeymoon. She wasn't exactly thrilled about my inclination toward DIY weddings or my use of the word "cheap". I don't mean I want a cheap looking wedding, I just want the wedding to ultimately be cheap! There is a difference!

So here are the myths I found:

Myth #1: Handmade Is Poor Quality
Above and beyond all other things I hear about handmade/DIY weddings, I hear “Handmade is poor quality” the most — and it kills me!
While there are varying degrees of skill and quality control in the crafting world, most artisans and crafters take great pride in their work and put forth their best efforts for their customers.
The diversity of handmade products available to consumers is truly astounding. A creative couple can find nearly any wedding-related item in a plethora of styles available nowhere else in the handmade community. Etsy is a testament to that!
Handmade goods are (often) far superior to mass-produced, machine milled items in both quality and style. Not only is the handmade item getting personal attention and care, it’s the direct result of someone’s skill and craftsmanship. That’s not something a machine can ever give you.

Myth #2: D.I.Y. Equals Disaster
This is, oddly, one of the most common myths I hear from prospective DIYers. This one usually comes courtesy of some of the more fear-mongering wedding industry people who try to dissuade do-it-yourselfers. This myth is a favorite of mine to dispel.
Usually accompanied with stories of tragic consequences (death, physical harm, eternal embarrassment) of handmade weddings gone wrong, the DIY doomsayers maintain that crafty couples are incapable of creating a fun, fabulous wedding without professional intervention.
The fact is that anyone can have a happy, harmonious handcrafted wedding. Pro help is wonderful when a couple has the need, the budget, and can find the right vendor but it’s not an absolute necessity to pull of a fabulous wedding day.
To be fair, DIY isn’t for everyone and, yes, problems may indeed arise. However, the possibility of problems does not a disaster make. (Remember: even professionals make mistakes.)

Myth #3: Handmade Is For Low Budget Brides or Tacky, Tacky, Tacky
With nightmares of favors wrapped in endless balls of tulle, garishly outdated 1990’s décor, and an abundance of doe-eyed children tchotchkes, some couples have expectations that handmade/DIY is well, tacky.
The face of the DIY/handmade wedding has changed dramatically in the last few years. Once relegated to those that had lower-than-national-average budgets, handmade has gained tremendous momentum in all budget ranges. At DIYBride.com, I’ve worked with couples with less than $5,000 to some in the $40,000 – $60,000 range in the last few years. And none were anywhere near tacky.
As more DIY projects are shared in our crafty communities and as couples strive for more individuality, handmade objects are more accepted and appreciated as part of the wedding experience. DIY/handmade weddings are now stylish, unique, fun, and totally representative of the couple.

Myth #4: D.I.Y./Handmade Is Always Less Expensive
One of the biggest myths about going DIY or handmade is that’ll be less expensive than off-the-shelf and pre-packaged options. Not true!
While couples can save big bucks by buying through indie artists or making things themselves, that’s not always the case.
The adage “you get what you pay for” is pretty accurate. You want quality? Be prepared to pay for it. Time and effort, tools and supplies, and skill and expertise all cost money whether you DIY or hire a pro.

More jewelry organization ideas

I am still on the hunt for a great inspiration of what to do to house and display all of my jewelry! Like I said last time, I have some big requirements to fulfill for this project. Check out my last blog to refresh your mind about what those requirements are. I have been scouring the internet for that one great, jaw-dropping, I-can't-believe-I-didn't-come-up-with-this-sooner idea! In my research I came across some more good ideas that could develop into great ideas, or be great ideas for someone else!

So here are some of those inspirations for your delight and  use:

A friend made one of these and it is fabulous!

This is a silverware drawer organizer re-purposed into a jewelry organizer. Such a good idea!

DIY jewelry holder ideas

Here is my latest dilemma: I need to figure out a unique way to organize my jewelry. I have a few stipulations though: 1. I want it to have some element of DIY {for obvious reasons} 2. it needs to fit in a small area that is mostly hidden when the bedroom door is open 3. it has to be high enough that my niece and nephew can't get into it and play with it, but low enough to accommodate my short stature! These are some peculiar stipulations, I know, but I do what I can with what I have!

I found some interesting ideas online and I hope to incorporate some of those ideas with some of my own ideas and therefore create wonderfulness!! {Don't judge for my word choices!!}

Here are the pictures that I found online and I will keep you posted on what I come up with!

Floorboard memories

Something that I really wanted to do before we laid the tile down in my bathroom was to write memories and verses and names on the floor as a little secret way to remember things. I want it to be somewhat of a time capsule that someone will discover when they rip the tile up in the future! It was a lot of fun to come up with things to leave as a legacy for the next owners!

I got the idea from a church in my area that invited all of their members to come in before the carpet was put down and write peoples' names that they were committing to pray for their salvation. Years later, the church was sold to another church organization and when they remodeled it they found all of the names of people. It would be interesting to know if any cool things happened with these people!

Here is an update on what I did in my bathroom to memorialize my time of life living in this house!

What would you write as a time capsule of sorts?

Wedding Decor just for me

.. In honor of wedding season, I wanted to do a blog (or series of blogs) of wedding ideas for decor. I love the trend of outdoor, rustic weddings that are all the rage right now. I hope that when I end up getting married this concept is either still in, or far enough out that it seems cool again! Either way, I don't really care! I have always liked what I like and don't care too much what other people think about it! So here are a few different ideas that I think are adorable and will hopefully be represented in some form at my wedding! I found all of them on Etsy {love that website!} and they are all relatively inexpensive.

I love Mason jars! They remind me of the days when I used to help my great-grandmother can tomatoes and seeing all of the canned foods in her basement fruit cellar that she kept stocked! I guess that's what happens when you live through the Great Depression and all the fear of wars. Mason jars are all the rage right now, so if they are your thing too, my suggestion is to stock up now while they are cheaper!! You can also find cool glass jars at antique stores and flea markets for cheap. I also think the blue color

and the waves in the bottom picture are really cool!

I really like the looks of burlap, especially for a wedding decoration. Burlap is pretty cheap too. I think this idea of adding lace trim to the edges is a great way to add a bit of class and make it unique!

These baskets would be adorable for a little flower girl to carry down the aisle! It's not too big and bulky and they are unique! I've seen the typical flower girl baskets at wedding shops and I don't like that cookie-cutter feel. I want something like this for my niece to carry down the aisle on my day!
My faith is really important to me, and if I am not getting married in a church I want some representation of that faith and our commitment to God in the ceremony. This cross is really interesting with the rustic wood and lack of straight lines and beat up look. It would be perfect in the type of wedding that I want to have!

Table Setting Decor Inspiration

I am a typical girl in that I plan my wedding in my head all the time! Ok maybe not ALL the time, but if I come across something I think is really cute I come up with ways to incorporate it into my future wedding. {Whenever that may be!} I came across this inspiration on a blog that I regularly follow. The author has some really cute ideas and I enjoy the honest and slightly sarcastic way that she writes! The blog is thriftydecorchick, you should check it out and follow her as well!

The blog that I saw this morning and was instantly inspired by was coral summer tablescape. She was sent a set of dishes from Target {so jealous! How do I get them to send me stuff? lol} and she put together an entire table setting with adorable centerpieces and chargers and everything based on the colors and the season! There are tons of pictures on the blog itself, but here is a highlight reel of sorts!

I saw these and thought how cute this would be for the kind of wedding that I want to have. I want a simple, fun wedding feel. Stress-free and relatively cheap would be nice too! I love the Mason jars and babies breath and jars with sand or rice and little votive candles surrounding a larger jar with a simple flower arrangement! And I love the wooden table that it's all sitting on. The pink coral color is great for a summer garden party, but I think I would do different colors for my wedding scheme!

This table setting is simple looking, but it is beautiful!

The good ~ The bad ~ and The ugly in design

I am a lover of all things forgotten and unwanted. It's the way I've always been. I don't know why. I haven't psycho-analyzed myself in order to figure out the reason behind this, but I'm sure it has something to do with my father or my mother... don't all psychological flaws come back to them in some way?? hahaha! So any way, I love the things that other people consider random, ugly crap!

Here is a collection of things that I have fallen in love with for this decorating project. I love old things because they have a history and a story behind them. I prefer history and likely American made craftsmanship over mass produced foreign items.

I saw this chair and fell head over heels, big time!! All you have to do is sit in it and you would be won over! It is the most comfortable chair and it was only $25 at the Salvation Army!

I found this clock on a random end cap shelf at the Salvation Army! It was $3.99 and it works! Can't beat that!

My wonderful parents bought this for me from some of their friends. The friends bought it new for some large amount of money and sold it to my parents for $100! I love a deal! I also like that we know the people and how they live. It's not my favorite color, but it was free for me so you won't hear this girl complaining!! (P.S. the blue and white bed rails sitting on the back are not part of it!!)

"Tale as Old as Time"

I have always wanted one of those bookshelves that had a secret passage hidden behind it where I could escape. Maybe this comes from a rough childhood, or maybe it's just in my nature to seek out solitude for a while in my day, either way I think it would be really cool to have!
I am also an avid reader, so being surrounded by books is strangely peaceful for me. Having tons of books on shelves reminds me of libraries and the calm, quiet atmosphere they have. So in honor of my love of books and book shelves, here are some fun and funky bookshelf ideas that I found online!

Colored Bookcase
Love the color coding!!

Beauty and the Beast? Anyone? Even as a child I loved this room in the movie!

Are you inspired? I know I am!!!

Kitchen inspiration

I really like the look of classic simple kitchens and that is why I am really inspired by these pictures below. The only thing I would change is that I would add a pop of color here and there to put a little more of my personality into the space!

Not so Nautical Navy

I think I picked a color palette and this morning I found the colors on another blog that I check out every once in a while! I'm not sure how much I will use the lime green, but the other 2 colors will be prevalent in my bedroom!

I want to paint at least one wall navy blue and I have a night stand that is pretty much this exact color already! My bedspread is a dark gray color that I hope will fade into the background a bit. I'm not sure about the rest of the decor in my bedroom, but I love this color scheme! It's warm without being brown or burgundy but also hip and vibrant without being overwhelming. I think the navy grounds the bright colors nicely!

What color palette would you love? Is your style a bit more modern or vintage? Maybe it's more muted colors or even neon colors! Either way, if you love it that is all that matters!

Favorite places for decorating spaces

As you probably know if you have read any of my blogs so far, I love things that are a bit off the beaten path when it comes to decoration and design. In order to help you see where I get my design ideas and find inspiration for decoration I wanted to devote this blog to the blogs, online merchants, and ideas of where to find these random treasures for yourself!

First of all, I just discovered this website the other day. It is a company that started at a family's kitchen table and is now an online presence as well as a store in Texas. Wisteria is that store/website. They have so many things that are inspired from places around the world. They have the kind of pieces that not everyone will have but everyone will want! I was skeptical at first. I expected their prices to be outrageous, as most of these interesting places are, but I was pleasantly surprised. They make "off the beaten path" designs affordable and add an extra layer of intrigue to any room! I will definitely be order from them in the future. Check them out at the link above! You won't be disappointed!

I also admire young designers that are bold about what they like and don't care if other people are gonna hate on what she does. I found a blogger/designer who embodies that! The website is Mr. Kate and I think she has a really cute and quirky kind of style that a braver me would totally be! She has a wide range of design ideas from room decor to fashion and even nails and phone cases and tattoos! Check out her blog for a refreshing, youthful style.

One of my favorite stores that I find myself wandering around when I need some style inspiration is Anthropologie. It has this cool bohemian vintage style about it with a rustic twist! It's basically a big store of awesome! It's a bit on the expensive side for some things, but nothing too extravagant or anything. The average person could shop there and spend a little more than they would at other stores, but not totally break the bank! But it is worth the extra for sure! Sometimes I just walk around the store and look at how they have decorated and forget to look at the merchandise! I love places like that! They sell a little bit of everything there! Clothes, shoes, accessories, books, notebooks, bedding, decor, plates, silverware, aprons, coffee cups and much more!!! I love it!

I also frequent local salvation army stores, antique shops, and garage sales to find interesting things to decorate with/wear/get inspiration from! My latest item was actually found by my 60 something year old aunt at a garage sale for $4, photos to come! Inspiration can be found in the strangest places, you just have to take the time to look! Follow me on Pintrest too for more inspirations and funny things! "Ashleyry"

What's your favorite precious metal? Gold of course!

I have always been more of a silver or white gold fan, but I have to admit that these inspirations for gold decor may be challenging me to step outside that box and go for the gold!

Gold Room 5
Intricate gold wall stenciling

Gorgeous gold wall stenciling is a luxurious backdrop in this comfy space.  Several different patterns are used together  successfully – there’s the wall, the bed pillows, the bed coverings, even the texture of the silver floor pillow.  The soft, gauzy drapes are a good complement to the wide, gold baseboards.

When you look at home furnishings both vintage and modern you can find a wide array of gold furnishings that would look great in that special room that you want to class up a bit!
